A stream can not rise above its source?

One of the laws of nature is that the headwater (source) of a stream, river, brook, etc., will always flow downward, mainly because of gravity. Therefore it cannot flow upward, or rise, above its source without some form of help. It has been a while, but I have heard that saying used in conjunction with finances - don't spend more money than you earn.
